A brief description of each type of asbestos survey:
Are carried out in all non-domestic properties in order to allow the dutyholder to produce an Asbestos Mangement Plan. This plan is required by the HSE and helps prevent accidental exposure to airbourne asbestos fibres released as the asbestos containing materials through normal wear and tear. The asbestos containing materials should be re-inspectedregularly by a competent person to ensure that the ACMs remain in good condition.
Must be carried out before any maintenence tasks are started that could involve the disturbance of asbestos containing materials that are hidden in the fabric of the building. Often called a fully intrusive survey, the survey team must make every effort to find all of the ACMs in either, the location where the work will be carried out, or, in the case of a pre-demolition scenario, all of the asbestos containing materials.
Statutory re-inspections must be carried out to make sure that a, previously well maintained, ACM has not become damaged which, in extreme circumstances, could be realeasing asbestos fibres into the atmosphere. Inhaling asbestos fibres has been closely linked to the development of the deadly cancer, Mesothelioma, from which, it is estimated that at least 4000 people die from a year. AMS can carry out your re-inspections and update your asbestos management plan on your behalf.
