Window workers asbestos exposure

November 22nd, 2010

The owner of window replacement company has been fined for exposing his workers to asbestos.

Welshpool based Meadow View Windows and Conservatories owner, Philip Leslie Davies, failed to ensure that a suitable asbestos survey had been carried out prior to having four workers remove soffits at a property in Powys. The soffits were found to contain asbestos, an insulating and fire proofing material banned from use in the UK due to it’s link with the deadly lung cancer, mesothelioma.

If Davies had had his workers undertake an Asbestos Awareness Training Course, they would have realised the dangers of working with the material and how to identify which materials can contain asbestos.

He was fined after a prosecution brought by the HSE, but he has sentenced his employees to a lifetime of anxiety while they wait to find out if they have contracted mesothelioma, a disease that can take up to 40 years to show symptoms.

AMS provide both UKAS accredited asbestos surveys that should be carried out before any renovation project and also UKATA asbestos awareness training to keep you, your workers and your family safe from the dangers of asbestos exposure.
